FAQ: What does the Alpha-Stim® 100 do? What are the differences in models?

Answer: The Alpha-Stim® 100 treats physical pain of all types with application of microcurrent electrical therapy through the affected area. It also treats anxiety, insomnia and depression utilizing cranial electrotherapy stimulation applied through ear clips. The Alpha-Stim® SCS treats anxiety, insomnia and depression. The SCS is simpler to use; the 100 model is more versatile given it can treat aches and pains throughout the body using self-adhesive electrodes or probes. The 100 model also comes with three frequency options rather than just the 0.5, and it has two channel outputs rather than one, which allows one to treat pain with 2 sets of self-adhesive electrodes, or allows two people to treat with ear clips at once. Put another way, the Alpha-Stim® 100 treats the body and brain, and the Alpha-Stim® SCS treats the brain.

Filing with insurance

Many patients want to know how to file insurance claims for Alpha-Stim devices for all of their FDA-registered indications, including anxiety, depression, insomnia and pain. We strongly encourage all patients to file claims for their Alpha-Stim units. Although we currently do not file insurance claims for individual patients, our staff will be happy to assist our clients in the process. We can provide clients with sample cover letters to use when filing a claim and we can talk with adjusters or medical directors at insurance companies to provide additional guidance and education. A new review paper on the use of cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) in the treatment of addictions was published in the current issue of Practical Pain Management. Historically the primary use of CES was in the treatment of symptoms of the drug abstinence syndrome. The article includes a meta-analysis of the data from a number of studies and as such is a great resource in this regard. Certification trainings now offered for PNW health care providers in use of cranial electrotherapy stimulation treatment for anxiety & depression

Allevia Health, Inc. is pleased to announce it is offering trainings in the use of Alpha-Stim(r) cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) with the opportunity for certification in proficiency. The first trainings will be held August 4 in Seattle and August 18 in Portland. Health care providers will learn about cranial electrotherapy stimulation for the treatment of anxiety, depression, and insomnia. The Alpha-Stim device has been FDA-approved for use in treating these conditions.

Applied simply through ear clips, the Alpha-Stim delivers a mild, often subsensory (.5 hz) pulse to the earlobes. Anti-anxiety effects are typically felt immediately and last for one or two days after a treatment. Relief from depression typically requires 3 or more weeks of treatments. The device increases levels of endorphins and serotonin in the brain as well as normalizing brain wave patterns.

CES can be used with patients by any health care provider who is licensed to diagnose and treat anxiety, depression, or insomnia. This includes physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, psychologists and licensed social workers.

The training will include review of the relevant research and clinical results and demonstration of the Alpha-Stim devices. The training also provides an excellent opportunity to ask questions and to talk with other providers who have experience with CES. While certification is not required to use the Alpha-Stim in one’s practice, many practitioners find that the in-depth training is helpful in incorporating the Alpha-Stim into their practice.

Discussion is invited regarding: 1) clinical cases (we ask that participants pay careful attention to issues of confidentiality) and the application of CES or MET, 2) research and treatment issues in various clinical settings, and 3) any other professional practice concerns or technical support issues. This review appears in the current issue of the Expert Review of Medical Devices [Expert Rev. Med. Devices 4(4):489-495, 2007] and focuses on applications of CES in the management of common comorbidities of FM, as well as benefits of supplementation with D-ribose to increase energy levels and stress management with evoked potential biofeedback devices in patients with FM.
